Adelphi men’s soccer star from Denmark, Mads Michaelsen, described as “tremendous asset” by coach Gary Book in teams rise to the number one ranking in the U.S.

The Adelphi Men’s soccer team has recently emerged as one of the top teams in the NE10 conference. The Adelphi Panthers have won two titles in the last five years, one in 2016 & the other in 2018. This program has been on the rise in the past decade and now they are showing even more improvements since coach Gary Book took over as head coach in 2018. In addition to the new head coach in 2018, the Panthers pulled in a sensational defender from Copenhagen, Denmark that has contributed greatly to the Panthers success in the past few years.

Mads Michaelsen was that player, he is an elite 20-year-old defender who had played for the Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium in Denmark before his time at Adelphi. During his time playing soccer in Denmark, he quickly became team captain and also was named Player of the Year in 2016. He also helped his team win the DBU Pokalen U-17 Cup. These were phenomenal accomplishments for the young teenage soccer sensation, but he was not yet satisfied.

Mads later joined the Adelphi Men’s soccer program in 2018, quickly adjusted to their style of play, and helped propel them to win after win in his two years playing as a Panther. In his freshman year, he made an immediate impact for the Panthers by helping lead them team to a division championship, as well as gaining his own personal accolades in earning All-Rookie status, NE10 All-Conference Second Team, and NE10 All-Rookie Team. In this 2018 season the Panthers finished with an outstanding record of 17-4-2, and also earned the number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, but eventually lost in the national quarterfinals to West Chester. Mads was a prime contributor to the success that Adelphi had achieved in that year and he was still looking to bring more to his team going into his sophomore year.

Some would believe that Mads would have a difficult time adjusting to the Panthers style of play led by Coach Book. However, Mads’ pure skill, determination, and superb communication with his coach and teammates allowed him to make the transition. When asked about his transition, Mads replied, “Our play style in many ways was very unorthodox and adapting to it was no easy task. Coach Book did a tremendous job in communicating what he expected from each play so that there was no confusion amongst the team on where to be and what you needed to do throughout the games. On top of that there was still great amount of freedom in Book’s system that allowed us all to be creative and showcase our skills in our own ways. Being apart of Adelphi Men’s soccer was an incredible experience and it was certainly not an easy task to perform 100% day in and day out, but after every win and the trophies we earned you looked back very happy to see your sacrifices truly payed off.” Mads was greatly appreciated by his coach and his teammates, and they all knew that there were certainly personal challenges for this young man in making a transition to a new team & school, let alone a new country.

As stated by Coach Book, “As a player Mads brought a combination of abilities. He is a tenacious and astute defender who reads the game extremely well. Mads ability to also attack in a powerful and technical way made him a tremendous asset to the team and helped to take the team to the number one ranking in the USA.” Mads was an impact defender and clearly made huge contributions to this team in his two years playing with them. His intelligence, shown in his consistent performance in school in achieving NE10 Academic Honor Roll in Fall ’18, Spring ’19, Fall ’19, helped him dominate on the field as well as he took his time to think through every play before they happened by slowing the game down and subsequently perfecting each possession. Along with this intellectual approach to the game, he also had the physical skills to prevent opposing players from passing by him.

Teammates loved Mads, and knew he brought a special element to the game that allowed them to stay strong-minded in closely-contested games. Panthers defender, Billy Horgan was also asked about Mads contributions to the team over the years as he played right alongside Mads on the defensive end. Billy said, “Mads was insanely efficient and as consistent as they come. When the games got tough, Mads feels the atmosphere and excels. There has been numerous occasions where our team was struggling to find a rhythm and Mads produced a special play to inspire us all to work harder and to put in the extra effort to control the game. He’s much faster than he looks and deadly going forward. He was a leader on and off the field and a guy to look up to in the locker room”. Along with Mads tremendous skillset, he was also a team-oriented player as his teammates respected and looked to him to perform fro them down the wire.

Moving on to 2019, this was just as special of a season for the Panthers as Mads once again led his squad to great heights. The Panthers started the season dominating once again. They came out to a 15-game unbeaten streak as they turned in a 14-0-1 (one tie) record. Along with this amazing start, the Adelphi Panthers received the number one ranking in the USA in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Poll for the first time in program history. Unfortunately, they lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament, however the finished the regular season with a NE10 regular-season title and an overall 15-3-1 record. This season was especially special for Mads, as he once again achieved immense personal success. He received NE10 All-Conference Second Team once again, ECAC All-Star First Team, NE10 Academic All-Conference, and CoSIDA Academic All-District. This year was a tremendous year for Mads, but unfortunately it was also his final year playing at Adelphi as well.

Mads has made the decision to move back to Denmark after the 2019 season and to pursue a medical career. Coach Book and teammates will miss him greatly as he was on of the leaders on the squad that consistently pushed his teammates to work harder which ultimately led to the great successes that Adelphi has achieved over the years. When asked about Mads’ departure, coach Book had said, “Mads combination of talents will be exceedingly difficult to replace.” There aren’t many young players with the abilities, leadership qualities, and professionalism that Mads displays on and off the field and the Panthers will need to work together moving forward to move on from the loss of their star player.

The Last Dance Episode 3 Review

Episode 3 of the Last Dance Documentary presented an in depth look a Dennis Rodmans’ lifestyle, personality, and his contributions to the 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls basketball team. This episode was released at 9pm on ESPN this past Sunday night, April 26th, 2020. As well as showcasing Rodman’s benefit to the Bulls, this episode also goes into detail on how MJ brought the bulls to the top of the league and maintained that leadership spot for years to come.

(spoilers following)

To follow-up two sensational first episodes that displayed the journey of the Bulls with the legend Michael Jordan, this episode followed the same storyline while taking a deeper look on star Dennis Rodman. Under Doug Collins the Bulls were emerging as one of the greatest teams in the Eastern Conference at the time. However, the one team the Bulls could not get by was the Detroit Pistons. Rodman was an elite defender in the NBA during his time in the league playing with the bad boy Pistons, San Antonio Spurs and then followed by the Chicago bulls. The Bulls added Rodman to their team as Jordan desperately needed some help with Scottie Pippen absent.

When Rodman was motivated and focused on basketball he helped Jordan continue to win, however this was certainly not every game due to Rodman’s personality disorder and party lifestyle. When Rodman was on the court with no distractions he was a menace on the glass and provided the Bulls with that physical strength component that they needed to have playing the nasty Detroit Pistons year after year. The Pistons brutalized Jordan and other stars by pummeling them into the floor every time they attempted to drive to the paint which took an immense toll on Jordan and other players as well. Now having what some people call the most controversial player in the NBA, the Bulls tightened his act up which allowed their team to develop into an immediate title contender. At first this move by the Bulls was heavily questioned by the league due to Rodman’s unpredictability and mental health condition. Having MJ and Pippen as strong leaders, over time the Bulls brought out the best version of Rodman which allowed them to add that toughness aspect to their team which was essential in beating teams like Detroit.

Overall this episode is an integral piece that showcased how the Bulls went from a playoff team to the leading team in the NBA. To see MJ’s development into the GOAT, the development of Pippen into an all star, and with the main focus on Rodman’s contributions to the team despite his personal concerns this is a phenomenal episode to watch. If you want to get a little bit of a deeper view on how this team thrived together and was put together to take on the bad boy Pistons which then allowed them to win an Nba championship.

Options-
Subject 1 –

Option number one would be an acquaintance of mine from a previous course I had taken last semester, he is in the same major as me (exercise science). I had a difficult time finding many options since I am a commuter so I thought he may be a good option due to the fact that I can easily get into contact with him through instagram. He is a current soccer player at Adelphi, and he is a sophomore. I think he would be an interesting person to interview for several reasons. First off, he is from Denmark and made the transition to living here at Adelphi University which is extremely interesting and unique. On top of that, the men’s soccer team has been thriving the past few years with NE10 title wins in the regular seasons.

Not only that, he seems to have many personal awards through his time here at Adelphi and from his high school in Denmark.

  • NE10 All-Conference Second Team (2018, 2019)
  • ECAC All-Star First Team (2019)
  • NE10 Academic All-Conference (2019)
  • CoSIDA Academic All-District (2019)
  • NE10 All-Rookie Team (2018)
  • NE10 Academic Honor Roll – Academic Distinction (Fall ’18, Spring ’19, Fall ’19)

At Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium

  • Played in the second-highest youth league in Denmark for B93 Boldklubben af 1893
  • Team captain who was named Player of the Year in 2016
  • Helped his team finish fifth in league for the 2017-18 season
  • Won the DBU Pokalen U-17 Cup

Due to his amazing accomplishments, excellence in school, friendly characteristics, and progress within the last few years I would think he would be an excellent choice, if not my number one choice of an interviewee. I would go in depth on his transition to a new country and how he handled that adjustment, as well as how is able to succeed in soccer at such a high level continuously while achieving excellent grades every year as well. I could talk to his coach as well to see how he performed each year and the noticeable improvements. And potentially teammates who have played with him or still do play with him and evaluate his talent and future expectations for him.

Subject 2 –

Option number two for me would be the men’s basketball coach as I have already met him earlier on in the semester from the game story. I believe he is also a great candidate to talk with for numerous reasons.

A little background information from Adelphi’s website. “In his tenure at Adelphi, Duke has led a program turnaround, and has posted a pair of winning seasons after Adelphi had recorded a series of consecutive losing campaigns. In his second season, the Panthers more than tripled their wins from a season ago to finish with a 20-9 overall record – posting a 20-win season and appearing in the Northeast-10 Tournament for the first time in four years. Three players have become 1,000-point scorers under Duke’s direction, four have earned All-Met status, and Michael Coffey was named the program’s first CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2016-17 before repeating in 2017-18.”

Overall, he has brought the Adelphi Panthers basketball team to 4 playoff appearances within 5 years, which is a phenomenal turnaround considering the history of the team the years before that. I would go in depth on how he was able to turn around this program and his top strategies in doing so. This would be the main aspect of the profile as well as his plans for the future years coming, and how plans to make a further push in the playoffs and finally win a championship.

Subject 3 –

Option number three would be the men’s soccer coach as he continued improving and building winning teams. The mens soccer team had won the 2018 NE10 title and I would dive in deeply on how he was able to build such a strong team starting off in his first year as head coach and what his hardships were as being a new coach.

“After a nationwide search, Gary Book was announced as the ninth head coach of the Adelphi men’s soccer program, effective May 21, 2018. He wrapped up his second season in 2019.”

“Book’s two years have seen the Panthers pick up from where former coach Carlo Acquista left off.”

“In Book’s inaugural season (2018), Adelphi went 17-4-2 and captured an NE10 Tournament Championship, just the program’s second since joining the league back in 2009. The Panthers would earn the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and dispatched LIU Post, 2-0, in the East Region final, before falling to eventual national runner-up West Chester by a 2-0 final in the national quarterfinals.”

This is an amazing accomplish and I feel like there is a lot that can be talked about in terms of winning the ne10 and then moving on to NCAA tournament and eventually losing in the national quarterfinals.

I would also like to know his plans for keeping the soccer team at the highest level in their division and possible future goals.

“Then, in 2019, Book’s squad opened the season on an unprecedented 15-game unbeaten streak (14-0-1), en route to receiving the No. 1 national ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Poll for the first time in program history. That ultimately led to Book getting his first-ever nod as the NE10 Coach of the Year. Despite bowing out in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Adelphi finished the season at 15-3-1 overall and came away with its fourth-consecutive NE10 regular-season title.”

For these overall accomplishments within only two years, I would also have him in my top 3 in terms of options to interview. I would like to figure out more background information on his life playing and coaching soccer and how developed into a coach and how he plans on taking an already solid program and taking them to the next level by developing each player to the maximal skill level.

Life Without Sports

To say the last few weeks has been an extremely difficult time for most people is a huge understatement to say the least. The coronavirus pandemic has hit the U.S. just as hard, if not worse than any other country in the world at this time. This has been an extremely frustrating, difficult, and hopeless time in America. Many people are losing their jobs, family members, and sanity. This period of time will go down in history as one of the most challenging and overwhelming times anyone living in the world will have ever gone through. Not only, are thousands of people fighting for their lives against this deadly virus, but the whole country has gone on pause as well, and this includes sports.

As a big sports fan, I am missing out on some of my favorite sports and teams that I watch daily. Sports for me is a huge part of my life, not only, do I watch sports like the NBA, MLB, and NFL, but, sports are something for me that keeps my going mentally in times of distress and hopelessness. Watching sports by yourself, with friends or family is a great way to relieve some stress in hard times in life. Yes, sports are just entertainment for some, but for me they comprise of most of my conversations with friends, most of my time spent watching T.V., and most of my free-time surfing the web. Many weekends for me are spent with friends and family awaiting the next big sporting event or game to watch with each other. Not having that part of life anymore is very upsetting to say the least. I turn on ESPN just to see the new coronavirus-caused cancellations or replays of old sports games. The first big loss of March has been madness for sports fans… march madness, this month is usually an extremely fun time for college basketball and sports fans when set up their brackets an anxiously await for the end of every game in the tourney to see if their bracket was correct. Of course it is not only about brackets, many people go to see and support their favorite college team on their path to the trophy. Next, the MLB was supposed to begin their regular season yesterday March 26th, which unfortunately got postponed. When the MLB season starts it gives all baseball fans a release of happiness and joy knowing that they will be able to watch their team play on the daily for months. When the MLB season starts for it means a lot to me considering I have spent a great portion of my life playing baseball myself, and supporting the New York Yankees. Baseball has been an enormous part of my life ever since I started playing at a young age, and this is the first year I am not able to relive that opening-day sensation yet. The cancellation that was the most distressing to witness was the NBA suspending the rest of their season. NBA for me is my go-to sport of choice to watch on TV, youtube, instagram, and twitter. I follow season stats, team records, and award races all year, and this season was just getting very interesting with playoffs approaching. As a huge Lebron James fan, I am truly disappointed to not watch him continue balling on his MVP-playing pace. Along with his teammates performing extremely well, like superstar Anthony Davis; the Lakers were showing up this year despite all of the negativity and criticism from the previous year, leading their team to a potential championship this year, as they were leading the western conference in wins.

Of course missing sports is just one aspect of life for me and many others and does not even begin compare to some of the other losses and especially some of the stresses and anxieties that doctors, politicians, business owners, elderly populations, and in general, most humans living at this time are having to deal with. There is a massive anxiety-provoking uncertainty in the air on when life and sports will come back to normal. No one knows for sure how long this quarantine/self-isolation state will last, and people are becoming restless, bored, fearful, and hopeless. Of course, on the flip side, many people are using this time to learn, write, read, and transform themselves into better humans in general.

Week 11 – San Francisco 49ers at Dallas Cowboys November 12, 1995 @ Texas Stadium, Irving, TX

New England Patriots – Deflate gate interview with Bill Belechick

Adelphi Men’s basketball stays strong with their 4th straight win in an 87-82 overtime thriller against the College of St. Rose

Garden City, N.Y.- The Adelphi Men’s basketball team pulled off a spectacular overtime win (87-82) against the College of St. Rose at home to bring them to 18-7 on the season and bump up their win streak to 4 games.

The Panthers have had some difficulties against the College of St. Rose in the past decade with an overall 9-14 record. This year Adelphi is looking to be much stronger than the now 2-15, St. Rose Golden Knights, now defeating them twice on the season.

Phenomenal performances by one of the NE10’s top scorers, Adelphi’s own Ronnie Silva, putting up 28 points with a second half point total of 18 points and Spencer Foley continuing his hot streak from last game leading the team in scoring with a total of 30 points and a perfect 10-10 shooting free throws.  They had also both combined for 50 percent shooting, 10-20, on 3 pointers.

This game was a back and forth, closely-contested game with 12 lead changes throughout.  Adelphi had some difficulties throughout this game, starting off with a 9-2 deficit early on.  Later on, more difficulties had arisen when Sekou Sylla continued his scoring tear from the first half into the second half.  Sylla had a total of 23 points also tying with Josh McGettigan who also scored 23 points as well.

The Panthers finally got it together and were up 62-54 after a ground-breaking dunk by Tim Delaney with 7 minutes left in the second half.  Every time Adelphi seemed to have the game locked up, St. Rose managed to comeback. Two 3-point attempts were missed by Adelphi in the closing seconds of the second half which allowed St. Rose to have another opportunity in overtime with a tie score of 71-71.  McGettigan was trying to hold his team together with 9 points in overtime when Sylla was held to 0 points in overtime.  After St. Rose started off quick with 4 points in OT, Adelphi managed to comeback with Silva and Williams both hitting 3 pointers and then Foley securing the game with a clutch 6-6 free throws.

Adelphi’s Coach Duke knew the talent in Sylla leading up to the game, acknowledging him as one of the league’s finest players.  Sylla the second leading per game scorer in the league, averaging 22.5 points, was going to be a problem for Adelphi to overcome if they wanted to secure this win.

When asked about the Panther’s defensive strategy going into overtime, Coach Duke said, “Our main focus was to slow down number 3 (Sylla), he’s awesome, by doing that we tried to keep him away from his left hand, and we were also trying to not allow number 2 (Adam Anderson) to get off any 3-point shots.” The Panther’s came up big with the win following Coach Duke’s game plan. Adelphi kept Anderson in check with 14 points going 1-5 on 3-point attempts and Sylla was slowed down in overtime and throughout the game with 7 total turnovers, even without Adelphi’s Tim Delaney due to a late foul-out in the second half. Delaney was filling up the stat sheet with a monstrous 5 offensive rebounds, 5 defensive rebounds, 6 points and 3 blocks until he hit his 5thpersonal foul which led to Duke putting in Dwaine Williams. Coach Duke acknowledged defense was tougher without their tallest player Tim Delaney, who was on the bench for the late second half and the overtime period. However, Adelphi’s resilience and “play hard” mentality instilled by Coach Duke allowed them to stay strong and secure their 18thwin.

Adelphi needs to limit turnovers and continue their dominant 3-point shooting in future games if they want to continue on their win streak.  Adelphi will be playing in their home court this Wednesday the 19thagainst Pace University at 7:30pm.  With only a few games left on the season Adelphi is in a great spot this year to make a run in the playoffs.

College Football – The undefeated Adelphi Panthers dominate in a 24-9 road win over the New Haven Chargers

The Adelphi Panthers football team stays very strong defensively with another big win yesterday against the New Haven Chargers in a dominant team performance, ending with a score of 24-9 in New Haven Memorial Stadium to bump the Panthers up to 2-0 this season.

The Panthers defense has started off on a roll this season only allowing a mere 16 points in their first two wins.

On the other hand, the Adelphi Panthers have looked sloppy in other aspects of their play besides their point differentials.  The Panthers were penalized 11 times for 119 yards and also had an absurd 5 fumbles, and losing 3 of them.

Despite these unfortunate errors, the Panthers were able to put up a grand total of 513 yards of total offense, due to the efforts of their two freshman running backs, Paul Jones and Jimmy Roberts, each rushing for over 100 yards, and their junior, first year starting-quarterback, Cameron Brown throwing for 220 yards and rushing for 43 to top it off.

Running back, Jones has been questionable this season in terms of his play even though he is rushing for a great average yards per carry, including 121 yards on 10 carries in last week’s win over Pace and had 103 yards on 14 carries yesterday, he also had 3 fumbles also in yesterday’s game.

The Panthers head coach, Joe Smith, was asked about whether or not Jones would continue to be the starter at running back, Smith said, “Jones is my guy. I’m sticking with him no matter what. No questions asked.”

When quarterback Brown was asked about the game, he had said, “I was a little nervous after we gave the ball away down 3-0, but the defense came through and then our offensive line destroyed them.”

The Panthers started off a little bit slow with a 3-0 deficit, when New Haven’s kicker Jamie Gornell booted a 40-yard field goal 2 minutes, 54 seconds into the first quarter.  However, the Panthers then went on to score 17 unanswered points leading into halftime.

The Panthers were able to hold on to their lead securing the win, scoring another touchdown, while allowing only 6 points in the second half.

The Adelphi Panthers will travel to Southern New Hampshire next week to take on the No. 3 ranked team in the nation at 4 p.m. Southern New Hampshire has beaten Adelphi four straight times, including a 35-3 loss at Bonomo Field last October.

When quarterback Brown was asked on next week’s game against Southern New Hampshire, he said, “New Hampshire is a good team. We’ll definitely be the underdogs going in. I’m excited about the challenge.”

If the Panthers continue their defensive prowess and are able to hold on to the football and limit unnecessary penalties, they should be in a great position to win and stay undefeated.

About Me

Hey, first off thank you for coming to check out my blog! This first post will be about me and my career goals!

My name is Michael Chite, I am 20 years old, currently studying Exercise Physiology at Adelphi University. For those of you who do not know what that major is, Exercise Physiology is essentially the study and application of exercise into people’s lives. If you ask, “Why is there a major for something you can learn online easily?”, there is more to it than just running is cardio and cardio works out your heart to make you healthier. Exercise Physiology dives deep into the WHY and the HOW the exercises give the benefits they do and the way that they do that. With this major my career goal is physical therapy/personal training. Exercise was always something very important to me, since I was young I have always played a sport ranging from baseball to soccer. In playing these sports, I figured out my true passion, which is Bodybuilding/Strength Training. Once I first joined a local gym of mine, I immediately loved the idea of transforming your body and mind through strenuous lifting. Since I started training, I have been consistently making progress for about 4 years now and I couldn’t imagine myself not lifting weights ever in my life. For me bodybuilding is more than just changing my appearance, but it is changing my life, by building more confidence (something I have always struggled with), but also building a work ethic and dedicating myself to something day in and day out which helps me in all aspects of my life.

Ok, so now that you have learned about me, I want to tell you how I plan to achieve these career goals. So first and foremost, I have a year left to complete my bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology, then I plan on obtaining a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology as well. With these degree’s I plan on then working at a local gym, building up my reputation and following through real life acquaintances and social media platforms. I plan on spreading my knowledge of exercise physiology with the world, and hoping that at least one tip or bit of knowledge can benefit someone else. I will spend time researching new training protocols, and finding out the latest information through scientific studies as well. You may ask, Michael, why are you going through so much schooling just to become a personal trainer? My answer to that is, firstly, if you love your career, then as long as you are making enough money to live a happy and healthy life that is the main goal in life. Being realistic, working as a personal trainer for my entire adulthood, I doubt it would be enough income for me to support a family and myself in the future. This is why after a few years of living my passion on my own and building up my own personal knowledge and social media following, I plan on studying an extra 3 years of school to get a doctorate in physical therapy. This is my main long-term goal in my life. I would say once I accomplish that, I will feel as proud as I ever had before in my life, and I will be living a life that first and foremost helps other people, while supporting myself and family as well. All said and done, my goals in life are to work as a personal trainer successfully for at least a few years, become a physical therapist and potentially open my own practice, and then lastly, to help as many people as I humanely can teaching them how to live a healthy lifestyle with training, exercises, nutrition, injury prevention knowledge. Social media is taking over the world now a-days, and if you do not have an account, people do not know who you are. Because of this reality, my personal goal is to hit 1 million followers on instagram so that I can not only help and support tons of individuals daily with ease through internet access, but also so I can live my dream of becoming a widely recognized Physical Therapist/Bodybuilder as well.

Thank you for taking the time to read my first blog! In the near future I will be working on my writing skills and through another passion of mine Sports Writing! Be sure to stop by weekly for the latest updates!
